ChatGPT for Good? A Systematic Analysis of AI in Education

Kasneci et al. (2023) provided one of the first systematic analyses of ChatGPT's impact on education, identifying both opportunities and challenges:

Sweet (Opportunities)

  • Personalized tutoring: AI can provide 1-on-1 tutoring at scale, adapting to each student's pace
  • Immediate feedback: Students get instant responses to questions, reducing wait time for teacher feedback
  • Accessibility: AI can help students with disabilities, language barriers, or learning differences
  • Teacher support: Automating administrative tasks frees teachers for more meaningful interactions

Bitter (Challenges)

  • Academic integrity: AI-generated essays are difficult to detect and undermine assessment validity
  • Critical thinking atrophy: Students who delegate reasoning to AI may not develop deep thinking skills
  • Equity gaps: Access to premium AI tools may widen educational inequality
  • Accuracy issues: AI confidently presents incorrect information (hallucinations), which students may not verify
