Kasneci et al. (2023) provided one of the first systematic analyses of ChatGPT's impact on education, identifying both opportunities and challenges:
Sweet (Opportunities)
- Personalized tutoring: AI can provide 1-on-1 tutoring at scale, adapting to each student's pace
- Immediate feedback: Students get instant responses to questions, reducing wait time for teacher feedback
- Accessibility: AI can help students with disabilities, language barriers, or learning differences
- Teacher support: Automating administrative tasks frees teachers for more meaningful interactions
Bitter (Challenges)
- Academic integrity: AI-generated essays are difficult to detect and undermine assessment validity
- Critical thinking atrophy: Students who delegate reasoning to AI may not develop deep thinking skills
- Equity gaps: Access to premium AI tools may widen educational inequality
- Accuracy issues: AI confidently presents incorrect information (hallucinations), which students may not verify
